Visual documentation on these uniforms:
Photos A
Dated 1888. S. F. Hess baseball card of J Noonan (88). Full view at left, detail view at right. Photo date confirmed at this was player’s only year with the team. Photo shows that player wore a white uniform and cap, with dark belt and stockings. This uniform matched that depicted in the illustrated Hess cards from this same year, see photos B, C & D. It is possible the uniform worn by Noonan had lettering across the shirt, similar to that shown in photos E & F. Years Noonan with team from baseball-reference.com. The Hess card and boxscores from 1888 spell the player’s surname as Noonan. Baseball-reference spells the surname as Nunan.
Photos B, C & D
Dated 1888. S. F. Hess baseball cards of, from left, J Mullee (88), Finn and H Smith (88). Illustrations of players were most likely drawn from photographs. Players were depicted wearing a white uniform, which included a white cap circled by subtle horizontal bands, a red belt, red stockings and a red undershirt. Drawing of Mullee possibly shows that player wore a shirt with lace ties running from the neck to the breast. The shirt closure depicted on the Finn card is hard to determine. The shirt closures depicted in other illustrations in this card set are also hard to determine. The Smith card shows a side view of the uniform, with no extra trim work or accents. Years with team from baseball-reference.com.
Photos E & F
Dated 1888. S. F. Hess baseball cards of J Smith (88). Left and center show two different cards and poses, image at right is a detail view of the center card. Illustrations were most likely drawn from photographs. Player was depicted in both poses wearing a uniform that matched the outfits shown in photos B, C & E. However, photos E & F show that player Smith had the team name lettered across the shirt. The fact that two different poses of the player included lettering on the shirt possibly suggests the team name was not added later when the illustrations were made. Photo E also showed a button placket running down the player’s shirt. Year Smith with team from baseball-reference.com.
